Peer Pressure
By Kelly Newman
The youth of today need to think twice before making decisions that may
wreck their life.
They usually make bad decisions because other people (like their friends)
think it might be fun or theyíre afraid of being called boring and
not trying something different.
Other reasons why they do things like this may be because they want to
prove that they donít care what other people think. Or they want to
prove theyíre not scared of trying new things. Sometimes it could
be because they know that their parents donít want them to be doing
that kind of thing, so they do it because they know theyíre not allowed
and want to annoy their parents.
The people that make these choices may even do it because they donít
feel loved or they may think that nobody cares for them.
Some people who try these things (like smoking) usually say theyíre
hooked and say they canít stop. But thatís not true ñ they
just donít have enough support or self-confidence to get through
it all.
The people who do quit should be given credit for taking the courage
to do that, and for realising itís not good for you. I think the only
way to help these people would be to talk to them and make sure that they
know the consequences if they keep doing this and try to change their mind
about it. If you can change their mind than stick by them and give them
all the support they need while theyíre quitting.
If the problem is more than just smoking, like drugs you could try
to talk them into getting counselling or something like that. If you
donít
succeed than you could talk to their parents or some one else who they
are close to, and tell them about this personís problem and they
might be able to help.
